Information about temperature measurement

Your baby's body temperature can be measured in different ways. The rectal measurement (in the bottom) is considered particularly accurate as it measures the core body temperature and is usually recommended by paediatricians.


Important: The rectal temperature is around 0.5 °C higher than the actual core body temperature because it is measured deeper in the body.

Example:

If you measure 38.0 °C rectally, this corresponds to around 37.5 °C inside the body.

MARY by sticklett gently measures the temperature close to the body via infrared - directly on your baby's chest. This is particularly comfortable, non-invasive and allows continuous monitoring without disturbing your baby.


Please note: MARY may be 0.2-0.4 °C below the actual value. Compared to rectal measurement, the deviation can be up to 0.9 °C.


Our tip:
When setting the alarm in the app, it is best to set the threshold value 0.8 °C lower than for a rectal measurement. This way, you can ensure that you are informed early on if your baby's temperature changes.


The difference between core, near-body and skin temperature is crucial - especially when it comes to reliable health care for babies and toddlers:

Skin temperature:

  • Measured directly on the skin surface, e.g. on the abdominal wall or wrist
  • Strongly influenced by environment, humidity and body position
  • Can be significantly below the actual core body temperature, e.g. in cool room air
  • Less suitable for precise statements about incipient infections or rapid temperature rises

Temperature close to the body (MARY by sticklett):

  • Measured in an area close to the centre of the body, e.g. the chest
  • Much more stable than skin temperature alone, but not identical to core body temperature
  • May deviate slightly (e.g. 0.2 - 0.5 °C difference), but is often sufficient for trends and preventive purposes
  • Ideal for continuous measurement in everyday life, e.g. for monitoring babies without disturbing them
  • Not a substitute for fever measurement - but very helpful for early detection of changes

Body core temperature:

  • This refers to the temperature inside the body, e.g. in the mouth, anus (rectally), ear or deep in body tissue
  • Very accurate and medically relevant - used to diagnose fever, hypothermia, etc.
  • Normal range: approx. 36.5 °C to 37.5 °C
  • Measured during a medical check-up (e.g. with oral, rectal or tympanic thermometers)

Fazit:

Core body temperature = medical value (e.g. for fever)Body temperature = indicator suitable for everyday use, e.g. to see if the baby is dressed too warmly or if an infection is imminent


Especially for babies whose temperature regulation is still immature, taking their temperature close to the body provides more reliable values for assessing their state of health - without having to disturb them by constantly taking their temperature.
